This Privacy Policy explains how Character AI | AI Girlfriend ("Character AI", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our iOS application (the "App"). By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.
We built Character AI to be a private, judgment-free space. We collect only what we need to provide the experience, and we never sell your personal data.
1Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
Information you provide
- Chat & conversation content — the messages you send to AI characters and the characters or personalities you create or customize.
- Account & profile data — optional information such as a display name, preferences, or character settings you configure.
- Support requests — information you send us by email when you contact support.
Information collected automatically
- Usage data — features used, interactions, session length, and in-app events, collected through analytics tools.
- Device information — device model, operating system version, language, and approximate region.
- Purchase data — subscription status and transaction identifiers (we do not receive or store your full payment card details; payments are processed by Apple).
2How We Use Your Information
- To provide, operate, and personalize the App and your AI conversations.
- To generate AI responses, images, and voice messages you request.
- To manage subscriptions, free trials, and billing through Apple.
- To improve the App, fix bugs, and develop new features.
- To respond to your support requests and communicate important updates.
- To detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, or security issues.
- To comply with legal obligations.
3AI Conversations & Processing
Character AI uses third-party artificial intelligence model providers to generate responses, images, and other content. When you chat, the contents of your messages may be sent to these providers solely to generate a reply. We instruct our providers not to use your conversations to train their public models where such controls are available.
AI characters are not real people. Responses are generated by software and may be inaccurate. The App is intended for entertainment and companionship and is not a substitute for professional medical, legal, financial, or mental-health advice. If you are in crisis, please contact a qualified professional or local emergency services.
4How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal data. We share information only with:
- Service providers — AI model providers, cloud hosting, analytics (e.g. Google Analytics), and subscription management partners that process data on our behalf.
- Apple — for payment processing and subscription management.
- Legal authorities — when required by law, court order, or to protect rights, safety, and security.
- Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy.
5Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as needed to provide the App and for legitimate business or legal purposes. Conversation data tied to your use is kept while your account or installation is active. You can delete your conversations within the App at any time, and you can request deletion of your data by contacting us.
6Data Security
We use industry-standard safeguards, including encryption in transit, to protect your information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live (for example, under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Request correction or deletion of your data.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Request a portable copy of your data.
- Withdraw consent at any time.

8Age Restrictions

The App is operated and data may be processed in countries other than your own. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your information to these countries, which may have different data-protection laws than your jurisdiction.
10Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes may be communicated in-app. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
